MakeHuman's program is designed to create human and humanoid characters in three dimensions. The models can then be used in games, illustrations, animations, or transferred to ZBrush (or a simpler Sculptris) and Mudbox programs, where they will be "polished". MakeHuman is also completely free and open.

Its source code is available under the AGPLv3 license. The program developed from the MakeHead script written in 1999, which generated the head in Blender. The program consists of an efficient core written in C and a functional "envelope" in Python, which can be freely extended.

During this time, the team that creates it has developed an interesting and unique system of creating base grids, in which loops created by edges (edge loops) have been optimized for animation, we will not find a single triangle and not a single pole, from which more than 5 edges will leave. The poles alone make up less than 1% of the grid. The graphical user interface is based on an in-depth study of users' habits and behaviour.

It is so intuitive that it can be quickly mastered after the first commissioning. The parameters provided by the modeling allow for precise selection of the model's appearance according to age (from infants to the elderly), gender, muscles and race, as well as very precise control of details, such as the shape of hands, feet, ears and facial features. It is worth noting that MakeHuman's creators strive for the anatomical correctness of the presented body.

One of the base models was created by Kaushik Pal, known for his work in Maya and interesting programming projects. Ready models can be exported in formats: RIB (renderman), OBJ (wavefront obj), MHX (Blender), DAE (collada) and MD5 (Doom 3).
