TrueCrypt is a fully free program used to encrypt data "on the fly". It allows you to encrypt entire disks, their partitions and portable USB disks (USB flash drives), as well as to create virtual encrypted disks (also hidden) of a specific capacity - in both cases password-protected against unauthorized access. Encryption is performed using very strong encryption algorithms AES-256, Serpent and Twofish.
It is also possible to use cascade encryption, i.e. encryption of data with several algorithms in succession. Note:
TrueCrypt is no longer an undeveloped program, and may contain security vulnerabilities that may allow third parties to access encrypted data. We recommend replacing it with VeraCrypt, the direct successor to TrueCrypt. VeraCrypt has undergone a full audit of independent researchers and has been found to be safe.
A novelty in the seventh version of the program is the introduction of hardware support for AES encryption acceleration - provided, of course, that the processor driving the machine is equipped with such acceleration. In addition, it is possible to configure the encrypted container so that it is automatically mounted in the system when connecting the device on which it is stored (e.g. removable disk).
It is also important that from version 7.0 onwards, TrueCrypt encrypts the Windows Vista and Windows 7 exchange and hibernation file using Microsoft's official API. An interesting novelty is also Favorite Volumes Organizer - a window allowing you to manage encrypted partitions and containers from one place and configure their extended options. TrueCrypt 7.0 also supports the creation of encrypted partitions on sector size 4096, 2048 and 1024 bytes (Windows and Linux versions).
Previously, only file containers could be created on such disks.
