VirtualDub is an extremely powerful program for linear processing and compression of films in avi, mpeg or even DivX formats (you can choose your own codec). Despite its minimal size, it has powerful capabilities. The basic features of the program are:

drop any frames to *.bmp file, drop the soundtrack to *.wav, cut and insert any scenes from movies, merge movie files, convert movies from old codecs to new ones, change the resolution to higher, change the sound format, convert video files, the ability to insert effects into the movie (blur, sharpen), change the frame rate, etc. VirtualDub capabilities can be greatly enhanced with optional plugins, which can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
