MariaDB is an increasingly popular relational database server, which was created by one of the creators of MySQL. Originally, the project was based on MySQL 5.1 with backward compatibility. According to the authors, it is an improved alternative to the mentioned SZBD from Oracle and is used by developers of software and websites around the world (e.g.
Google, Wordpress.com or Wikipedia). Its advantages are speed, scalability and reliability. Also noteworthy are the large number of plug-ins that extend the capabilities and the availability of a helpful tool that make MariaDB a highly versatile server.
It can be successfully used to create a small application, as well as very complex projects. MariaDB has support for GIS, JSON and ODBC interface formats. APIs for the most popular programming languages are also available.
