A command line tool to encode video content using the latest version of Theora 1.1. Theora is a free video codec created by the Xiph Foundation based on VP3 codec. Combined with Xiph's Vorbis audio codec and OGG multimedia container, it provides a completely free, open and free complete platform for encoding audio-video content across the entire spectrum of needs, including streaming.

It is a competitive solution for many other multimedia formats (such as AVI, MP3, WMV...) which are mostly patented commercial technologies. The ffmpeg2theora tool is based on the libtheora library, a reference implementation of Theora format support prepared by Xiph. For playback of content encoded based on Theora/Vorbis/OGG, we recommend using a VLC player or Directshow filters to play this format using, for example, Windows Media Player and other players using this technology.

Video content encoded with Theory and embedded on web pages with a video tag existing in an HTML5 sketch will be able to natively play Firefox from version 3.5 and Google Chrome from version 3.0.182.2.
