Cave Story is a perfect example of the fact that platformers driven by great history do not have to be the work of a big studio, and modern graphics is not the most important either. The free project of one talented programmer, drawing from the best old titles of this type, surprises with its ingenuity, polishing and length. It was quickly translated by fans into many languages, including English.
In the game we direct the actions of a character suffering from amnesia, who is, of course, jumping, and at the same time is able to use weapons quite well. As history progresses, he will gain the better weapons needed to eliminate both ordinary enemies and bosses. It will become a rod inserted between the rack and pinion of the mysterious evil doctor's machine, planning to conquer the world.
On the way to his defeat, he will get to know many very interesting NPCs, influencing some fates directly here. The game is a successful combination of discovering the world, jumping on platforms plus shooting, seasoned with elements from the RPG game. Full of buried things here, for example by expanding life, and weapons can be raised to a higher level, increasing their effectiveness, by collecting special crystals falling out of enemies.
Well-thought-out control does not lead to frustration. Cave Story was quickly hailed by many as not only the best two-dimensional platform on the free production scene, but also a fantastic project even compared to commercial works. The game became an inspiration for others from the Indian trend, i.e.
titles of independent producers. Thanks to its popularity, it finally received graphically improved versions, released as regular paid games in a box.
