Silverlight is a runtime environment for graphically rich web applications, and since version 3.0 also stand-alone and browser-independent desktop applications created for this Microsoft platform. From the very beginning Silverlight has been created as the main competitor of Adobe Flash. Its advantage is multi-platform, but not entirely - Linux users must be satisfied with Moonlight, an open implementation of Silverlight developed by Novell in cooperation with Microsoft.
